Welcoming another batch of Chinese doctors

Dear Editor,
Medicare in Guyana has come in for quite a beating recently. So I really welcome the news that another batch of Chinese doctors are in the country to offer much needed help to the country’s health care system. History shows that Chinese doctors have always been supportive, making difficult and complex surgeries a reality in Guyana. The time extends all the way to almost two decades of service, and this via the aegis of the Chinese medical brigade.
I am very certain that many would greatly benefit from these professionals. I like the idea of continuity too. The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) no sooner had bidden farewell to an outgoing batch than it has welcomed another one. No break here, too; and I personally appreciate this, since ill health, like time and tide, awaits no one for an untimely visit. Making matters even better is the fact that apart from the expertise available, the nation benefits from the donation of specialised apparatuses to assist in the medical field.
Like any developing nation, Guyana has it limits and shortages, so this input seeks to anticipate cases of difficulties.
The help is mainly in areas such as general surgery, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, radiology, anaesthesia, plastic surgery, and pathology.
The fact that it is 15 specialists is also reassuring. This allows for some to be stationed at the Linden Hospital Complex, while the remainder will be at the Georgetown Public Hospital. I just wish for a strong sense of patronage from the Guyanese people. Medical help is a most tedious undertaking, and it is hoped that these people will not be taken for granted.
I do commend the efforts of the government. I add here, too, that sometimes the good is hardly noticed and heralded, but that is no reason to be derailed. Guyana has come a long way, even though the trip is never-ending.
I suggest that within the medical fraternity, especially at the lower tier, that steps be also taken to maintain a good image. This means that even medical receptionists have a role to play.
Yours truly,
Carmen Radcliffe
